Scented laundry detergents emit toxic chemicals, UW study says

Aug 26, 2011 Posted Under: Health Guide

Has laundry detergent made your itch, or given your kid a rash? A new UW study is confirming what some people have suspected all along: scented laundry detergents emit toxic chemicals.

In the rough and tumble world of laundry, fresh scents abound.

“Three quarters of the laundry detergents that people bring in here have scents in them,” says John Paukstis, manager of the Queen Anne Laundry Room.

Paukstis was surprised to learn those scents are toxic. Researchers say at least two of them are considered carcinogens by the EPA.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever heard anything like that,” says Paukstis.

Researchers say part of the problem is that manufacturers aren’t required to disclose the ingredients in these cleaners.

Doctors should learn personal finance during medical school

Aug 26, 2011 Posted Under: Health Words

I read somewhere in the comments here something to the effect of this: Physicians are only good for one thing: doctoring.

That would explain the general ineptitude of many physicians when it comes to skills outside medicine, such as political lobbying, or business and personal finance decisions.

The New York Times has written a helpful column thats required reading for any new physician, Investment Advice for Doctors: First, Do No Harm.

In the article, columnist Rob Lieber gives some reasons why physicians, in general, are so poor at managing their money:

We begin with physicians, for whom a combination of factors can conspire against success.

Research Shows How Some Folks Resist Getting Sick With the Flu

Aug 24, 2011 Posted Under: Health Words

Your immune system response to a flu virus determines whether or not you will get sick, and that immune reaction can be observed through gene activity, according to a new study.

Researchers examined more than 22,000 genes in 267 blood samples from 17 healthy volunteers who were infected with a flu virus. There were significant and complex differences in the immune responses between the half of the participants who got sick and those who didn’t, the investigators found.

The gene activity, or expression, data revealed how the volunteers’ immune systems reacted and organized a response to flu virus.

Good Morning Irene: What to Eat in a Hurricane

Aug 24, 2011 Posted Under: Health Guide

Youve stocked up on flashlight batteries and boarded up the windows in preparation for Hurricane Irenes arrival.

Now consider this: what in the heck are you going to eat if the power is off for days?

For answers, we turned to Sherry Mahoney, director of nutrition for the Mayo Clinic in Florida. She says meal-planning for a hurricane or any other disaster assumes no electricity, gas or even running water. After the storm passes, there may be a chance to cook outdoors, however, using a propane cooker or grill. (Those are never to be used indoors.)

When stocking up ahead of a storm, pick what your family and children would want to eat anyway, Mahoney says, so that it wont go to waste if you dont need it.

Don’t eat anything that won’t fit on a fork: It’s the daftest diet ever, but it actually works!

Jul 28, 2011 Posted Under: Health Guide

Diets used to be something that started on a Monday morning – and would usually be ditched that evening. But since I moved to France, my attitude has changed.

I am married to a Frenchman, who watches my weight as closely as I do. We are perfectly aware to the nearest pound what we each weigh – and how much weight we need to lose.

In France, diets arent just for fat or obese people; they are followed meticulously by everyone who wants to stay slim.
