Drinking six to eight cups of water called ‘nonsense’ in editorial

Jul 14, 2011 Posted Under: Health Words

Drinking six to eight glasses of water each day is healthful, most health experts agree. But apparently not everyone is on the same page. A general practitioner from Scotland says that health advice is “thoroughly debunked nonsense” and is propagated by bottled water companies out to make a profit. In a commentary published online in the British Medical Journal, Margaret McCartney quotes experts that say drinking too much water can cause hyponatremia (low sodium levels in the blood) and expose people to pollutants. And the public health push makes people feel guilty for not drinking enough. Experts were quick to pounce on the commentary as being misleading. The Find more info…

Are You Too Old for Contact Lenses?

Jul 13, 2011 Posted Under: Health Words

I started wearing glasses when I was seven and was always self-conscious about them. So I was thrilled to get my first pair of contact lenses at 16. I remember looking in the mirror and realizing that it was the first time I could remember seeing my face without glasses.  That pivotal moment is now decades in the past and lately I have been wondering if there is any point at which I will be too old to wear contacts.

Age affects eyesight pretty quickly. Once you reach 40, you’re probably having trouble reading the fine print of menus, especially in dimly lit restaurants. That’s a condition called presbyopia and it means that your eye is losing the ability to focus on near objects.

Female teenage binge drinkers more at risk than young men

Jul 13, 2011 Posted Under: Health Quotes

San Diego – Female teenagers who binge drink could be damaging the part of the brain that controls their memory and spatial awareness. But California researchers say boys don’t seem to be equally affected. Most teenage girls who binge drink, which researchers define as drinking over three pints of beer, or more than four glasses of wine at one sitting, don’t think much of it. In fact for most teenagers, it’s a badge of achievement to be able to drink so much. Teenage boys who drank four pints of beer or an entire bottle of wine were considered to be binge drinkers. But WebMD reports that research has found that teenage girls suffer more than young men, in terms of damage to their brains. Researcher Susan F. Find more info…

Swazi king endorses mass circumcision in bid to fight HIV

Jul 13, 2011 Posted Under: Health Guide

MANKAYANE, Swaziland – Swaziland’s King Mswati III called Friday for his male subjects to get circumcised as he endorsed a campaign aimed at tackling the world’s highest HIV infection rate.

Flanked by a large royal contingent including his mother, who rules alongside him, four of his 13 wives and several children, Africa’s last absolute monarch said men and boys needed to get circumcised to help fight the “terrorist” virus, which infects one in four adults in the kingdom of nearly 1.2 million.

Studies have found men without a foreskin are 60 per cent less likely to get HIV, the virus that can lead to AIDS.

“It seems fitting that our men and young boys should be given an initiative that will help them fight this disease,” Mswati told a gathering of thousands in the southern town of Mankayane, where he gave his official endorsement to the campaign.

“This virus I shall liken to a terrorist.

Nearly every night, South Floridians get a glimpse of Ryder Trauma Center, the region’s only Level 1 trauma facility. In some cases, the person rushed to Ryder clinging to life after an accident or an attack is a police officer.

At a news conference Wednesday at Ryder, Miami-Dade Police Director James K. Loftus expressed his department’s collective thanks to the venerable trauma center by presenting a certificate of appreciation to Miller School Dean Pascal J. Golds
